Navigator is Anaconda's free product, used by millions for data science and development work. This was a complete redesign of Navigator and the first project at Anaconda to use the new Figma design system.
I redesigned Navigator to make it more intuitive and put the user's work up front. This redesign improves users workflows and makes it easier to find and discover packages and apps to use with python environments. I leveraged the design system throughout the process.
More notes on this below.
I designed an advanced search with category facets to greatly improve package discoverability.
With this improvement users can build a new environment from a package search. This offers users more control and helps new data scientists understand package categories.
Data scientists or developers will use environments in a separate application to do work. I redesigned the main environments view with the users workflow in mind, people can access their apps, search for and add packages, and more, right in their environment.
To understand user needs I started by researching conda environments and mapped how people use environments for various types of work. Typically this is data science or software development work. In the process of understanding all of this I interviewed users of the "classic" version of Navigator to assess it's weaknesses to find areas to improve.
This was the first project at Anaconda to incorporate a design system in Figma and there was a lot of evolution of the design system concurrent with the product design. I started desgining in wireframes pulling assets from the design system to make more complex components. I designed the framework, navigation, drawers, and many other patterns which drove refinements in the whole system for the company.
I made the entire design file into an interactive prototype for user testing. I was able to leverage the components I designed to make hover states, menus and more interactivity that we ran through user testing. The feedback we received drove a a few refinements and helped us hone an onboarding flow.
